Backlight in photography involves positioning the main light source for a photograph behind the primary subject. This can create stunning pictures like dramatic scenery, dreamlike silhouettes or beautiful portraits.

There are many subjects that look great with backlighting

  • Flowers and leaves look lovely as they are slightly translucent objects, so the light comes through them and gives them a nice glow.
  • Other items with unique shapes or texture that are highlighted with backlighting.
  • Glass, water and ice look so much better with magical backlight shining through rather than lit flat from the front.
  • Portraits can gain a beautiful rim light that separates them from the background.
