Use a slower shutter speed to capture a sense of motion in a moving object.

There are two ways to do this.

  • Blur Blurred Subject With Background In Focus (requires a tripod) – our challenge for THIS week.
  • Blurred Background With Subject In Focus (the panning technique) – this will be our challenge for NEXT week.

Thanks to Will for these suggestions.

There have been some excellent examples of blurred subjects uploaded to our cluster gallery for the past few challenges:

Set up a tripod to photograph

  • a fast-moving object (eg train)
  • a slower moving object with slow shutter speed in the dark as per the sparklers and Bendigo images above
  • in daylight use an ND filter to slow your shutter speed as per Justin’s image or to smooth the water in a waterfall image.

The Digital Photography School has a number of excellent tutorials that cover this technique:

(Next week there will be tips on panning to keep your subject in focus.)

How to upload your image

You have until next Tuesday to upload your image to Cluster. Members have all been sent an invitation to join and most have done so already. If you have any trouble feel free to email Esther. We also encourage you to leave encouraging comments for other members.

We’d love your suggestions/requests for future challenges. Please leave them as a comment under the challenge notification in Cluster or Facebook.

We will also post this competition on our “Friends of BCC” Facebook group so our friends can still participate by sharing their images on Facebook.

The next challenge…

Use panning to keep your subject in focus. There will be tips on this technique next week.
