Tonight Boyd presented a demonstration on mat cutting.
Supplies:
- Mat cutter – available at the clubrooms during any meeting
- Useful tools such as double-sided tape and blades can be purchased economically at the Reject Shop or discount craft store (such as the one at The Marketplace), and you might also find a self healing mats there
- Steel ruler from Bunnings
- Mat board – available in art stores such as Arthouse Direct (159 McCrae St)
- Plain paper to back the photo. You can use foam core for a more professional look.
Here are some excellent instructions that are similar to what Boyd presented – courtesy of a club in New Zealand: Matting and Mounting Prints
Here are some YouTube videos to help:
- how to cut a mat
- how to quickly and easily mount your pictures on the mat
We also discussed what people do with their prints after the competition. There were a variety of ideas:
- leave mounted and store in a cupboard
- remove from the mat and reuse the mat for another entry
- store the photo in a display book or archival scrapbooking album (with 12″x12″ sleeves)
- cut into strips for bookmarks.
